Does anyone know if this hype on the Apple website is just that - hype? Have they come across some new way of producing superior AAC files (better than Lame mp3)? I did some searching on Google about AAC. Most articles reported that, in the past, the file format never lived up to expectations! Apparently not....I wonder if the AAC codecs for AG discussed in previous posts produce the same quality?AAC: MPEG-4 audio AAC (for Advanced Audio Coding, a big part of the MPEG-4 specification) is the cutting-edge audio codec that’s perfect for the Internet. AAC encoding compresses much more efficiently than older formats like MP3 (which iTunes still supports, by the way), while delivering quality rivaling that of uncompressed CD audio. In fact, expert listeners have judged AAC audio files compressed at 128 kbps (stereo) to be virtually indistinguishable from the original uncompressed audio source. iTunes 4 and QuickTime 6.2 is all you need to get started. You may be interested in this at Hydrogen Audio. There is testing with the various AAC codecs at 128 kbs taking place. http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=10107&hl=&s=62e1971bdd9f379e7a8a3962433a7b6c I have used the Pystel AAC codec but I could not distinguish between it and mp3. Against MPC it failed miserably in my book.

As far as AAC goes... don't use iTunes.Definitely go with what they say at HydrogenAudio as suggested above.
