I found out that the interface to lame_enc.dll has been updated so it now also accepts the predefined settings often asked for on this forum. So I have made a test version which can use these settings. Yes, it's true, now you can finally use --alt-preset standard with LAME as internal encoder!

http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/ag183test.zip
Here is from the included textfile:
This is a test version of Audiograbber. Users should first have downloaded Audiograbber from http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/download.html
Then install it and replace the audiograbber.exe file with the one from this zip file.
This version will let you use the predefined settings from LAME with the lame_enc.dll as internal encoder.
Modify the following line in audiograbber.ini: MP3QualityMode=
Use one of the following:
MP3QualityMode=R3MIX
MP3QualityMode=VERYHIGH
MP3QualityMode=ALTPRESETSTANDARD
MP3QualityMode=ALTPRESETSTANDARDFAST
MP3QualityMode=ALTPRESETEXTREME
MP3QualityMode=ALTPRESETEXTREMEFAST
MP3QualityMode=ALTPRESETINSANE
MP3QualityMode=ALTPRESETABR
MP3QualityMode=ALTPRESETCBR
The VBR quality seems to have effect but just a little. For default setting set it to VBR 4.
The VBR method seems to have no effect so you can set that to whatever you want.
When you run Audiograbber do not click any of the radio buttons for Voice, Low, Normal or High quality.

That's good news - I mentioned this on an earlier thread but couldn't find out how to do it with AG - now I know! I will give the test version a go.

No excuse for p*** poor 128 k/bit mp3's now...

As for the VBR quality the presets should overide any other settings.

No, the EXE version of LAME is great.

The whole point of putting Alt Presets in the DLLs was to be more useful like the EXE.

Ripped a couple of CD's last night using the test version of AG and the lame_enc.dll using --alt-preset standard. It works great!

Rather than edit the ini file will there be greater support direct from Audiograbber using the lame_enc.dll and the presets in future versions?

I am sure there will be a dropbox with the settings in a future final version. Jackie most likely posted this testversion so you guys could download, test and POST your opinions in this thread! Do not just download, run and sit quiet. Always post your ideas.

If there is no drop down box, how do we know AG is using the presets correctly? What is the compression rate on the AltPresetStandard?

Under MP3 Compression on the Copying Dialog it states Alt Preset Standard Quality (Lame).

You can more or less confirm this when viewing the properties of a track with Foobar.

Foobar is a minimalist player but now rips, decodes, burns CD's (with Nero Present), tags and lots more.

See http://www.foobar2000.org/ for more.

I recommend the special version.

I opened the Audiograbber.ini file and added the line ALTPRESETEXTREME where the thread says to. When I rip the track and play it, ITunes shows it as being at 126kbs VBR. Is this right?

Lgoler, 126kbs is quite small for a ALTPRESETEXTREME encoded file, I'd be expecting something more like 256kbs.

Yes Itunes is free. However, for the PC, it is only available for Windows 2000/XP users and is a hefty 20mb download. It's AAC Encoder recently come out on top of a 128 k/bits AAC Test (see forum thread I posted).

Get it from
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

If you want to try AAC and if you have NT4/Win 9x why not use FAAC (Free Advanced Audio Codec) as an external encoder with Audiograbber instead?

You can get the latest windows binary from:
http://www.saunalahti.fi/cse/files/

Download FAAC.Zip (encoder), in_mp4.dll (for winamp 2 & 5) and FAAD.zip (the decoder if you need it).

More can be found at http://www.audiocoding.com/

Maybe Itunes has a bug in it which means it cannot display vbr properly. Try it in Winamp or Foobar.
