FLAC is a free open source Lossless audio codec. Thought it might be nice to be able to rip this way. Any thoughts? http://flac.sourceforge.net/format.html

FLAC is a really great format, and I've started using it a lot more lately. It's quite popular if you look over at Hydrogenaudio, and has good support. The two other good ones are Monkeys Audio, and WavPack which can be used both lossy and losslessly, or as a hybrid of both (I think Optimfrog can do this too). Should be a really simply matter to download the exe encoder and set up a command line in AG for any of those. The other great thing is that you can get gapless playback with pretty much all lossless formats these days. My only worry has been hard drive space, but I figure I'll worry about that when the time comes. Maybe a RAID 0 array with a few 300GB hard drives... yeah thats the ticket...

The FLAC.exe is supported by Audiograbber which has predefined arguments built in. FLAC also has hardware support unlike most Lossless Codecs (although the new Apple Lossless has hardware support on the i-pod -surprise, surprise!).As far as I know Monkeys Audio does not have a hybrid mode. Is this a new feature? Wav Pack and Optim Frog do but you will not be able to create them on Audiograbber (or EAC etc) as the rippers do not expect a hybrid file to be created and constantly overwrite them. I use a ripper to create the wavs and then convert them using Speeks front-ends.

I guess my sentence was a little bit confusing. I was saying that WavPack has a hybrid mode that combines lossy and lossless. Monkey's Audio, as far as I know, is just a plain old lossless format (and IMHO a really good one too). Now it's your turn to confuse me. Your saying you can't use the hybrid encoders with AG? I don't see why not, unless there is something I'm not thinking of (I am very tired at the moment). Maybe this site will help: http://www.saunalahti.fi/cse/EAC/index.html I'm sure that based on the info there, one would be able to extrapolate a workable command line for using AG with a hybrid encoder. Edit: Hmm, using wapet.exe I can create WavePack hybrid files (*.wv + *.wvc) no problem with AG, but even with putting in the proper argument strings according to AG help (info button in external encoder section), APEv2 tags aren't created. %d -t "Artist=%1" -t "Title=%4" -t "Album=%2" -t "Year=%6" -t "Track=%3" -t "Genre=%7" wavpack.exe -c -h -b384 %s [This message has been edited by XenoS on 02 September 2004 @ 05:33]

Well I have not used Wapet with Wavpack or Optim Frog so I will give it a go.However without using Wapet you will find that AG or EAC does not expect the hybrid/correction file and will constantly overwrite the first with the name temp. EDIT: Still no joy using wapet as the encoder wants to overwrite the existing temp.wvc file. AG never seems to name the correction file the same as the hybrid file as it does not expect it. Check that you have correction files for all your tracks. If yes you're lucky as even the wavpack authour states that you cannot use a ripper to create hybrid and correction files!!! I had no trouble creating hybrid files with the proper file names using the command line I stated above. I believe that is part of the reason for wapet.exe, not just APEv2 tags. Here is a screenshot of my settings, if that helps. I also have AG set to create filenames from artist, track, and title. [This message has been edited by XenoS on 02 September 2004 @ 14:35]
