Hi, first time poster here. Go easy on me!
I'm having some trouble getting my computer to playback line-in audio on the computer's speakers. The source is connected to the line-in port, (a pop-up window asks me do I want to use my source as a microphone or a line-in connection), but nothing comes out of the computer's speakers. The windows mixer is useless in this regard, as the only available options to tweak volume are for Volume Control, Wave, SW Synth and CD Player. There are no line-in playback options anywhere to be found. As for line-in recording, yes there are options, and windows sound recorder is picking up sound from my source, and can record and play it back. What I want though, is for the source to play back without having to record it!
My soundcard is the one that came with the computer, it's a SigmaTel HD Audio soundard.

Can anyone help, I would much appreciate any help offered. Thanks very much!

Are you connecting devices from an amplifier to the line-in input? If so on some amplifiers you may well need to make sure the cassette recording mode is set just like you would be recording from vinyl to tape. I hope that makes sense.

Thanks for the quick reply! That's not the problem, though. The source is actually a Nintendo Wii console. The L and R audio composite cables from the Wii are being fed into an audio Y-cable, which is then plugged into the line-in jack on the computer. Audio is definetly getting through to the computer, recording from the line-in with sound recorder works just fine, the problem is outputting the sound through the computer's speakers. I seem to have no line-in options in the windows mixer.

You can add line-in the the windows mixer. Open the mixer then Options>Properties then select line-in.

You can set other options there. Just experiment until the sound comes through the speakers.

I've already tried that, but I can't add line-in to the volume setting for playback- only for recording, the option just isn't there. Is the sound card to blame? And is there any software out there that might rectify the problem?
Surely there must be some way of getting a line-in source to playback on the computer..

Strange. The last thing I can think of is that the sound card has installed it's own mixer device to the system tray. Failing that I would suggest downloading the latest drivers for your card.

Sound Control is the only alternative to the windows mixer I know of.

Could it be possible that you have the mute button ticked on the mixer.

I haven't mentioned that because he states there is no option for line-in input full stop. But if that is the reason I will scream.

Right, I got the problem sorted. Yep, it's time to scream- the line-in input volume was muted. But I have a good excuse...
It turns out that the SigmaTel sound card on a lot of Dell laptops is absolutely terrible- with stripped down options and features. I found another forum thread dedicated to problems for this specific issue, and it turns out that LG had a driver for the sound card that re-enables a lot of basic options in the windows mixer. When I installed the driver, the line-in input volume appeared in the mixer- and it was muted. It works fine now. Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate you all taking the time to think about it!
Problem solved.

Ok, here it goes:

1) Download Winamp. ( http://www.winamp.com/player )
2) Get this plug-in. ( http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/dev/lineinWA2/index.html )
3) Install Winamp, and then install the plug-in.
4) Now, to get it to work.
-4.1) Open Winamp.
-4.2) go to option/prefenences/Plug-ins¬input.
-4.3) Double click "Line-in plug-in v1.80 (x86)”.
-4.4) Click add location wizard at the bottom right.
-4.5) Type a title in the box, click next.
-4.6) Use these figures*:
Sample rate = 32000
Number of Channels = 2
Bits per Sample = 32
-4.7) choose the line-in device on the drop-down menu.
-4.8) Highlight the text in the box at the top and press "Ctrl" + "C".
-4.9) Check both boxes and put the name as what you used at the start. Click Finish.
-4.10) close every box so you’re back to the main player.
-4.11) Press "Ctrl" + "L".
-4.12) Type "line: //" then press "Ctrl" + "V", then hit enter.
5) Plug your player into your line-in on you PC and enjoy.

Either:
Add me on MSN with "Egg07@hotmail.co.uk"
Or
E-mail with "Egg07@hotmail.co.uk". Subject "Line in"
If you have any problems
as I am only posting this in convince to others with the same problem, as this is the first result with "Play line in through speakers" when typed into Google.

*Other Figures can be used, but this is a good starting point, as the audio quality is good and there is no audio lag.

Wow, that's pretty lame that he didn't post how to get the driver.

Here's how:
1. go to http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp
2. product support
3. device driver
4. set device type to Notebook and select your operating system
5. search for "sigmatel"

I installed the largest driver...not sure if the other ones work.

All times are ET (US)
