I would like directions on how to transfer cassette music to Mp3 files using a boom box and a labtop computer. Any ideas?

this is an easy one. i'm doing something similar only i'm recording from a record player. you need to have a headphones plug though. go to radio shack and buy an audio plug that has plugs on both ends (2 male ends). plug one end into the tape player and the other end into the computers microphone plug. then just follow the directions to do line-in sampling. if you can figure out how to adjust the sound then please let me know.

Ummm... unless the signal being output from the 'boombox' (don't really know what is meant by this although seen the term used a few times - I assume its like an amplifier?) is of a very low level then I'd be more inclined to use the PC soundcard's Line In socket... but saying that many laptops don't have those... in which case if you can adjust the output signal then I'd set it to minimum and turn up slowly to a correct level...

To adjust input level you could use a simple potentiometer (volume cotrol).....

Take a 50Kohm potentiometer.... connect one end of the coil to both grounds of sound card and boom box connectors... connect other end of coil to boom box positive connector... connect wiper to positive of soundcard connector

s/card- wiper=s/card +
| |
| A | B
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| |
| |
Boom - Boom +
thus output will =
(Signal from Boom) * (A/(A+B))
So assume output from b/box = 100mV...
and if pot set so A=1 and B=2 (ie 1/3 of way) then signal at soundcard = (100 * 1/3) = 33.3Mv.....
Hope you understand that!!
I nearly don't!!
Sorry diagram hasn't worked too well....!
Anyway, look up 'voltage divider' on Google - sure you'll find something on there....
And in fact, here's a good a place as any to start...
Thanks for your help. After a trip to Radio shack and a couple hours of trial and error I think some oldies but goodies will be saved to digital from analog. Yeah!
